Dealerships Adapt to Cyberattack Disruption: A Resilient Response in the Face of Technological Challenges

In a remarkable display of adaptability, car dealerships across North America have been forced to revert to old-school methods of operation in the wake of a devastating cyberattack that has crippled a widely used software system. As the outage persists, these businesses are finding innovative ways to maintain their operations and serve their customers, showcasing the resilience of the automotive industry in the face of technological disruption.

Navigating the Challenges of a Nationwide Software Outage

A Technological Setback Sparks Ingenuity

For the past seven consecutive days, car dealerships, parts suppliers, and repair shops have been grappling with the aftermath of a cyberattack that has brought down a critical software system used by 15,000 retail dealerships nationwide. The software, provided by CDK Global, has been the backbone of many dealerships' operations, handling everything from purchasing to repairs. With the system now offline, these businesses have been forced to revert to a bygone era, relying on pen and paper to manage their day-to-day activities."We're going 65-70 years back in time," lamented Brendan Camilleri, the general sales manager at Napoli Nissan in Milford. "Everything is all hand-written. Invoices are hand-written...everything from service to sales." This sudden shift has undoubtedly created challenges, as the streamlined processes that have become the norm in the industry have been disrupted.

Adapting to the New Normal

Despite the setback, dealerships have demonstrated remarkable resilience, finding innovative ways to keep their operations running. Camilleri acknowledged that while business continues, the workload has piled up, and the lack of software support has made the process incredibly difficult. "Over the last several years, we've automated everything to make a buyer's experience much more smoother, and without having software to back us up makes it incredibly difficult," he said. The impact of the outage extends beyond the dealerships themselves, as service shops and parts suppliers have also been affected. Doug Fernandez, the owner of Turnpike Motors in Newington, explained the challenges they are facing in obtaining parts from their suppliers. "If we call up and ask them if there's a part they may have showed it in the inventory at one point, and they have to get out of the chair and go to the shelf to see if they actually have it," he said. "All their inventory is frozen. They can't keep count of it. They don't know if they have one or 10 of anything right now."

Navigating the Financial Implications

The financial implications of the software outage are also a significant concern for these businesses. Fernandez expressed his worries about the potential ripple effects, stating, "The worst part about it is there's a financial hit because you're going to have to quote stuff out to deliver things and you're going to have the wrong information and as the businesses we're going to have to pay for those differences. And there's just going to be a bunch of invoices and things that get lost."The uncertainty surrounding the resolution of the issue has only added to the stress and uncertainty faced by these dealerships and service providers. Both Camilleri and Fernandez have indicated that they have received no indication as to when the software could be back online, leaving them to navigate the challenges on a day-to-day basis.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Despite the daunting challenges, the automotive industry has demonstrated its resilience and adaptability. Dealerships and service providers have rallied together, finding creative solutions to maintain their operations and serve their customers to the best of their abilities. The transition to manual processes may be cumbersome, but it has also highlighted the ingenuity and dedication of these businesses. As the industry navigates this technological setback, it is a testament to the strength and resourcefulness of the automotive sector. The ability to adapt and overcome such disruptions will undoubtedly serve these businesses well in the long run, as they continue to evolve and embrace the changing landscape of the industry.
