Consumers Tighten Belts as Inflation Bites: Navigating the Shifting Spending Landscape

As the economic landscape continues to evolve, consumers are finding themselves in a delicate balancing act, navigating the challenges posed by high prices and making strategic spending decisions. The latest KPMG Consumer Pulse Survey sheds light on the shifting consumer behavior, revealing the nuances and trade-offs that are shaping the retail landscape.

Consumers Adapt to Inflationary Pressures: Prioritizing Essentials and Seeking Discounts

Scaling Back on Non-Essential Spending

The survey findings indicate that consumers are tightening their belts across various spending categories. A significant drop in the number of consumers expecting to spend more on personal care products, from 32% a year ago to just 21% currently, suggests a shift in priorities. Similarly, the data shows that almost three times as many consumers anticipate spending less (43%) than more (15%) on out-of-home entertainment, and nearly twice as many plan to spend less (41%) than more (21%) on dining out.

Maintaining Essentials, Cutting Back on Discretionary Spending

The survey reveals that consumers are making conscious efforts to maintain their spending on essential online purchases, with between 45% and 60% of respondents planning to keep their online spending on essentials at the same level. However, the picture is different for discretionary spending, as consumers expect to reduce their monthly expenditure on restaurants by 9%, entertainment and media (both in and out of home) by 8%, and travel and vacations by 7%.

Grocery Spending: A Bright Spot Amidst the Challenges

While consumers are tightening their belts in various areas, the survey findings suggest a more positive outlook for grocery spending. In fact, 29% of respondents expect to spend more on groceries, while only 18% anticipate spending less. This indicates that consumers are prioritizing essential purchases, such as food and household items, even as they scale back on other discretionary expenses.

Retailers Respond: Balancing Margins and Consumer Demand

The shifting consumer behavior has not gone unnoticed by retailers. KPMG's U.S. consumer and retail sector leader, Duleep Rodrigo, noted that some retailers have already lowered prices in an effort to maintain a balance between their margins and consumer demand. As consumers continue to seek out discounts and bargains, retailers will need to carefully consider their strategies, potentially placing more emphasis on product sizing and the overall customer experience rather than solely relying on price reductions.

Navigating the Evolving Retail Landscape: Insights for Consumers and Businesses

The KPMG Consumer Pulse Survey provides a valuable snapshot of the current consumer landscape, highlighting the nuanced and complex decisions that consumers are making in the face of high prices and economic uncertainty. For consumers, this data underscores the importance of prioritizing essential purchases, seeking out discounts, and carefully evaluating their spending habits. For businesses, the insights offer a roadmap for navigating the shifting consumer behavior, emphasizing the need for a multifaceted approach that balances pricing strategies with a focus on the overall customer experience.
