The researchers identified three distinct "melodic revolutions" – periods when pop melodies became significantly simpler. The first occurred in 1975, coinciding with the rise of genres like disco, new wave, and stadium rock. A smaller drop in complexity came in 1996, which the researchers attribute to the growing appeal of hip-hop and electronic music, as well as the increasing popularity of MTV. The third revolution took place in 2000, again linked to the mainstream success of hip-hop.
However, the simplification of popular melodies does not necessarily indicate a lack of complexity in the music as a whole. As Madeline Hamilton suggests, "My guess is that other aspects of music are getting more complex, and melodies are getting simpler as a way to compensate."
This technological revolution has introduced a new level of complexity to the music-making process, allowing artists to explore a wider range of sonic possibilities. However, this complexity may be prompting them to simplify other elements of their songs, such as the melodies, in order to maintain a balance and ensure that the music remains accessible and enjoyable for listeners.
Patrick Savage, a musicologist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, suggests that "We can't enjoy things that are too complex to comprehend, to remember or to reproduce." This idea underscores the delicate balance that artists must strike between innovation and accessibility when crafting their musical creations.
For up to ten hours a day, Hamilton listened to all 366 songs and manually transcribed their melodies into a digital notation program. She then measured eight qualities related to rhythm and pitch, and used a statistical model designed to guess the next note to analyze each melody's predictability. Finally, she employed algorithms developed by linguists to identify the significant evolutions in pop melodies over time.
Hamilton is already planning to build on this study, exploring the role of chords and expanding the analysis to include a larger set of songs. By continuing to delve into the intricacies of pop music's evolution, she and her team hope to uncover even more insights into the complex interplay between technology, creativity, and the enduring appeal of catchy melodies.
