New Jersey Man Flew to Florida to Attack Video Game Rival with Hammer In ‘Weird’ Case: Sheriff

Gamer's Deadly Hammer Attack: A Shocking Tale of Online Rivalry Gone Awry

In a bizarre and chilling turn of events, a young man from New Jersey has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary after allegedly flying to Florida to attack his online gaming rival with a hammer. The case, described by the Nassau County Sheriff as one that "makes you say all four of those" reactions, has left authorities and the public alike stunned by the lengths to which this digital feud escalated.

A Deadly Clash of Digital Adversaries

The Catalyst: An Online Altercation

According to the Nassau County Sheriff, the incident stemmed from "an online altercation" between the suspect, 20-year-old Edward Kang, and the victim, who were engaged in a multiplayer online game called ArcheAge. The sheriff acknowledged that the details of the dispute were unclear, but it was enough to drive Kang to take drastic action.

The Premeditated Attack

Kang allegedly flew from Newark, New Jersey to Jacksonville, Florida on Friday evening, telling his family he was "going to meet a friend he met years ago through an online video game." However, authorities say his true intentions were far more sinister. Once in Florida, Kang reportedly went to an Ace Hardware store and purchased a hammer and a flashlight, with the receipts for both items found in his hotel room.

The Violent Confrontation

Late Saturday night into Sunday morning, the victim was playing an online video game in his bedroom when he went to use the bathroom. That's when he encountered the suspect, Kang, "standing with a hammer raised in the air, in an anticipated strike position." Kang was reportedly wearing all black, gloves, and a mask during the alleged attack. The victim's stepfather, awakened by the victim's screams for help, found his stepson struggling with the attacker, who was still in possession of the hammer. Both the victim and his stepfather were able to disarm and restrain the suspect until deputies arrived.

The Aftermath and Aftermath

Responding deputies found a "significant" amount of blood in the entryway of the home and the victim's bedroom, indicating the severity of the attack. Both the victim and the suspect were taken to the hospital for treatment, with the victim sustaining "severe head wounds" that appeared non-life-threatening.Kang was released from the hospital and booked into jail, where he has requested a lawyer and has not been cooperative with authorities. When asked why he committed the attack, Kang reportedly told deputies, "He is a bad person online," referring to the victim.

The Consequences

Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper had a stern message for Kang, stating, "I would say, Mr. Kang, it's gonna be a long time before you play video games again." Kang is currently being held without bond, facing charges of attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary with a mask. This shocking case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise from online interactions, and the importance of maintaining perspective and restraint, even in the heat of digital rivalries. The consequences of Kang's actions have been severe, and the impact on the victim and their family will undoubtedly be long-lasting.
