‘All The Rules Are Changing’: Why AI is Accelerating Change to Every Part of the Food Business (and Beyond)

Navigating the Evolving Food Industry: Embracing AI's Transformative Impact

As a seasoned food industry professional, I recently had the opportunity to attend the Fancy Food Show in New York City, an event that has long been a highlight in my calendar. While the tantalizing food samples on the show floor were a major draw, the real reason for my visit was to deliver a keynote address on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the food business.

Empowering Small to Medium-Sized Food Brands to Thrive in the AI Era

Bridging the Gap Between Technology and Traditional Food Businesses

The audience at the Fancy Food Show was not your typical Silicon Valley crowd, eager to embrace technology for its own sake. Instead, these were successful small to medium-sized businesses, generating annual revenues ranging from million to 0 million by selling beloved products like hot sauces and healthier snacks. As food brands first and foremost, I knew I needed to approach the topic of AI in a straightforward and relatable manner.

Demystifying the Role of AI in the Food Industry

I began by highlighting the long-standing presence of AI in the food business, explaining how new forms of AI, particularly generative AI, are advancing rapidly. I then delved into the profound changes that will sweep across every aspect of these businesses, from sales and supply chain to customer acquisition and product development, over the next decade.

Preparing for the Seismic Shift: Embracing the AI Revolution

While some may have rolled their eyes at the prospect of yet another "disruption" narrative, I was adamant about the need to take this transformation seriously. Despite the ubiquity of AI discussions, I believe most people still underestimate the significant impact it will have on our daily lives in the coming years. In other words, we are largely unprepared for the dramatic shifts in the rules governing business and professional life.

Insights from a Seasoned Entrepreneur: The Urgency to Understand AI

My belief was reinforced when I had the opportunity to catch up with Samantha Rose, a seasoned consumer-product entrepreneur. Despite her impressive track record of success, which includes transitioning from a Yale magazine editor and award-winning poet to building and selling a highly successful housewares startup, Sam expressed a pressing need to take a year off to study and become an expert on AI. Her acknowledgment that "all the rules are changing" underscored the urgency for businesses of all sizes to adapt to the AI-driven landscape.

Exploring the AI-Driven Transformation of Consumer Behavior

During the panel discussion I led on AI, we delved deeper into the ways in which businesses may need to adapt. One key theme that emerged was the need for growing food brands to pay close attention to the radical impact of AI on consumer buying behavior. Imagine a future where personalized AI assistants guide our purchasing decisions, from recommending what to eat to finding the best deals. In a world where everyone is influenced by AI-driven recommendations, how will that reshape the way consumers interact with food brands?

The Pervasive Influence of AI-Generated Content

The discussion also highlighted the purposeful creation of AI-derived information aimed at influencing consumer behavior. We're already seeing this in the restaurant industry, where AI-generated reviews flood review sites, often indistinguishable from human-written content. As a publisher, I couldn't help but ponder the implications of Google's increasing emphasis on AI-generated answers, which could significantly impact the type of information consumers rely on to guide their decisions.

Embracing the Changing Landscape: Strategies for Food Businesses

In the face of these sweeping changes, it's clear that every industry and its associated value chains are evolving at an unprecedented pace. The rules governing business are being rewritten, and unfortunately, most of us don't have the luxury of taking a year off to study and prepare. As I shared with the attendees at the Fancy Food Show, the key is to stay vigilant, adapt quickly, and be willing to learn on the fly.
