Dining for a Cause: Chicago Restaurants Unite to Fight Child Hunger

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, seven Chicago restaurants have joined forces with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children during National Make a Difference to Children Month. By donating a portion of their sales, these establishments are providing nourishment and hope to those in need, demonstrating the power of collaboration and compassion.

Feeding Hungry Hearts, One Meal at a Time

Cesar's: A Family Legacy of Giving Back

Nestled in the East Lake View neighborhood, Cesar's authentic Mexican restaurant, known for its "Killer Margaritas," is leading the charge in this charitable initiative. Owner Israel Sanchez, who grew up working at the family-owned establishment, understands the importance of ensuring that no child goes hungry. "We are a product of the Chicago Public Schools system, and we know firsthand the impact that a reliable meal can have on a child's life," he reflects. Cesar's is donating 100% of the proceeds from its kids' menu items to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, a move that resonates deeply with the Sanchez family. "There's nothing worse than kids saying to you 'Mom, I'm hungry,' and you don't know how you are going to feed them," says Lulu Duran, the restaurant's chef. "That's why this cause really touches home for us."

Partnering for a Brighter Future

The Greater Chicago Food Depository, an organization dedicated to ending hunger, has teamed up with seven Chicago restaurants to make a tangible difference during this crucial month. "Cesar's is being a great partner," says Man-Yee Lee of the Food Depository. "One hundred percent of their proceeds from any kid's item menu will go to the GCFD."The need for such initiatives is evident, as the Food Depository has seen a 26% increase in visitors in the first quarter of the year alone. "Hunger still persists, and it's a real thing," Lee emphasizes, underscoring the importance of these collaborative efforts.

Dining with a Purpose

In addition to Cesar's, several other Chicago restaurants are joining the fight against child hunger. Adobo Grill, Amerikas in Oak Park, Marina's Bistro, Mirella's Tavern, Tatas Tacos, and Vinci are all donating a portion of their proceeds to the Greater Chicago Food Depository during the month of July. For these establishments, the decision to participate was an easy one. "We are a family restaurant started by our mom and dad 32 years ago," Sanchez explains. "We worked there growing up, and now our children help out as well. This restaurant is an extension of our family, and we're proud to be a part of this initiative."

Feeding More Than Just Stomachs

The impact of these restaurant partnerships extends far beyond the dining experience. "Every dollar that is raised and donated helps provide three meals," Lee reveals, underscoring the multiplier effect of these charitable efforts.By dining at these participating restaurants, patrons not only enjoy a delicious meal but also contribute to a greater cause. "When you buy something off the kids' menu, you'll be helping to feed the hungry," Lee explains, inviting the community to join in this meaningful endeavor. As the city of Chicago comes together to honor National Make a Difference to Children Month, these restaurants are leading the charge, demonstrating that a simple meal can have the power to transform lives and create a brighter future for those in need.
