Heroic Officers Rescue Children from Drowning Tragedy

In a harrowing incident that unfolded on a Connecticut beach, a New York man allegedly attempted to drown his two young children, only to be stopped by a group of courageous police officers who raced to the scene and pulled the children from the water just in time. The story has captured the nation's attention, highlighting the bravery of the first responders and the tragic circumstances that led to this horrific event.

Brave Officers Confront Unthinkable Act, Save Young Lives

Responding to Distress Calls

The incident began in the early hours of Saturday morning when a police officer on patrol in the area of Ocean and Dawson Avenues in West Haven, Connecticut, observed a Nissan SUV parked on the beach and heard "significant screaming" coming from the ocean. Immediately, the officer approached the scene and witnessed a man, later identified as 41-year-old Romney Desronvil from Queens, New York, and two small children in the water. As the officer waded into the ocean to assist, Desronvil allegedly took the children further out to sea and shouted at the officers to "stay back." It became clear to the responding officers that Desronvil was deliberately attempting to drown his own children, a horrific and unthinkable act.

Heroic Rescue Effort

Without hesitation, the officers jumped into the water and swam out to reach Desronvil and the children, who were approximately 100 yards offshore. Additional officers and firefighters also entered the water with a fire boat to aid in the rescue effort. The initial responding officer was able to retrieve both children and, with the help of other officers, they formed a human chain to bring the children back to shore. The children, who are under 3 years old, were immediately transported to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, where they were reported to be in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Emotional Toll on First Responders

The responding officers and firefighters were visibly shaken by the traumatic incident, with West Haven Police Chief Joseph Perno stating that they had been given time off to recover physically and emotionally. Three police officers were treated for minor injuries sustained during the rescue.West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer described the officers who initially responded as the children's "guardian angels," recognizing their bravery and quick thinking in the face of such a horrific situation. West Shore Fire Chief Stephen Scafariello became emotional while recounting the harrowing scene, acknowledging the impact it had on the first responders.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Romney Desronvil was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts each of attempted homicide and risk of injury. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the motive behind Desronvil's alleged actions. The children's mother, who was in New York on Friday night, arrived in New Haven by Saturday afternoon, according to reports. The family's tragic circumstances have left the community shaken and searching for answers. This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the critical role that first responders play in protecting the most vulnerable members of our society. The bravery and quick thinking of the officers involved undoubtedly saved the lives of these two young children, and their actions have been hailed as heroic by the community.
