Fishing for Kids: Empowering Families and Fostering Inclusion

On a sunny Saturday in June, the Variety the Children's Charity of the Delaware Valley (Variety) joined forces with the Ocean City Yacht Club and Ocean City Marlin and Tuna Club to host a remarkable event called "Fishing for Kids." This annual tradition, dating back to 1994, has become a cherished opportunity for families with children with disabilities to experience the joy of deep-sea fishing, free of charge and without judgment.

Unlocking Unforgettable Experiences for Families in Need

A Collaborative Effort to Empower and Inspire

The Fishing for Kids event is a testament to the power of community collaboration. Each year, the participating yacht and fishing clubs recruit their members to lend their time, boats, and fishing expertise to host one or two families per boat. This generous gesture not only supports Variety, but also Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Challenger League of Horsham, PA – a little league for children with disabilities. The event typically features around 25 fishing boats, ranging from 50-foot sportfishing vessels to 21-foot center consoles, all dedicated to providing an unforgettable experience for the families in attendance.

Overcoming Barriers and Creating Lasting Memories

Fishing for Kids is one of several "at play" events that Variety coordinates to offer families an opportunity to engage in activities they might not otherwise have the chance to experience due to financial or logistical barriers. For the children with disabilities, including those served by Variety, the event provides a unique chance to go on a private fishing boat and try their hand at the sport, perhaps for the first time. This experience not only creates lasting memories but also fosters a sense of inclusion and empowerment for these families.

A Win-Win for All Involved

The Fishing for Kids event is a true win-win for all involved. The members of the participating clubs have the opportunity to give back and share their good fortune with the disability community, creating meaningful connections and lasting impressions. For the families, it is a chance to enjoy a day of fun, relaxation, and the thrill of fishing, all while being surrounded by a supportive and welcoming environment.

A Day of Fishing, Feasting, and Fostering Connections

On the day of the event, families gathered at the Ocean City Yacht Club, where they embarked on private fishing boats and spent the morning casting their lines and reeling in their catches. After a successful day on the water, the participants returned to the yacht club for a celebratory BBQ lunch, capping off the day with a shared sense of accomplishment and camaraderie.

Fostering Inclusion and Empowering Families

The Fishing for Kids event is more than just a day of fishing; it is a testament to the power of inclusion and the transformative impact that such experiences can have on families with children with disabilities. By providing access to activities that may otherwise be out of reach, Variety and its partners are creating opportunities for these families to forge meaningful connections, build confidence, and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
