Lacing Up for a Cause: The Inspiring Story of the Four on the 4th Race

In the heart of Southwest Virginia, a community-driven event has been making waves, uniting runners and supporters alike in a celebration of camaraderie and charitable spirit. The annual Four on the 4th race, now in its 13th year, has become a cherished tradition that not only promotes physical fitness but also raises vital funds to empower underserved youth through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia.

Empowering Youth, One Step at a Time

A Race with a Purpose

The Four on the 4th race is more than just a running event; it's a testament to the power of community and the transformative impact that can be achieved when people come together for a common cause. Organized by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia, this 4-mile run on the 4th of July has become a beloved tradition, attracting over 500 runners each year and raising over ,000 to support the organization's summer programs. These programs, which cater to youth ages 5-18 across 10 locations, are designed to provide academic support, mentoring, and enriching experiences that can make a lasting difference in the lives of young people. From field trips to summer meals, the funds raised through the Four on the 4th race ensure that these vital services remain accessible and free for families in need.

A Collaborative Effort

The success of the Four on the 4th race is a testament to the strong partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia and the Town of Vinton. For the past three years, the two entities have joined forces to organize this event, which not only serves as a fundraiser but also as a community-building celebration."It was a great opportunity to support a great organization and give families an opportunity to get active on the fourth and kick off the holiday celebrations in the morning," said Mandy Adkins, the Town of Vinton's Director of Cultural Placemaking & Events. The race, which starts and finishes at the Vinton War Memorial, provides a festive atmosphere for participants and spectators alike. Attendees can enjoy live music, delicious food, and engaging activities such as face painting, all while celebrating the spirit of the Fourth of July and the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs.

A Lifeline for Families

For the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia, the Four on the 4th race is more than just a fundraising event; it's a crucial lifeline for the families they serve. As Christina Ballard, the organization's Chief Development Officer, explains, the funds raised help keep the doors open and ensure that summer camp programs remain free and accessible to all."It helps us keep our doors open. So, all the funds raised helps us underwrite all the costs of summer camp because we want to make sure that summer camp is free to the families so we can scholarship families and so these families aren't paying for summer camps we know summer camps can be expensive," Ballard said.By providing these essential services, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia are creating a safe and nurturing environment for young people, where they can learn, grow, and make lasting memories. The Four on the 4th race is not just a running event; it's a celebration of the transformative power of community and the unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation.
